Volunteer Opportunities

The Original Spring Door-to-Door Food Drive runs in Scarborough every Saturday and Sunday, for eight (8) weeks, beginning Saturday, April 19, 2025 until Sunday, June 15. Shifts run from 2:30 to 7 pm.

The location of the food drive changes weekly, depending on the target neighborhood, always within the Scarborough area. An eblast will go out a few days before each weekend, with the meeting location address and time confirmation.

Role Description

Volunteers deliver information flyers to residents’ homes informing the residents of the food drive and reminding them that RSFDF volunteers will come to their homes the following Saturday and Sunday to pick up their food donations. Volunteers return to the homes to collect the donations, pack and process them for delivery to food banks across Scarborough.

Volunteers work in small groups, under the supervision of adult supervisors.

Volunteers will receive a letter certifying their hours of service with Rising Sun Food Drive. The letters are sent as a pdf attachment to volunteers' emails within two weeks after the end of the food drive.

There are opportunities for growth and volunteers are encouraged to speak with supervisors about those opportunities.

Volunteer Expectations

Here are a few expectations on volunteer etiquette and procedures for everyone's safety.

1. Volunteers are instructed to only pick up food donations left outside the doors. There will be no door-knocking at any homes where donations were not left outside.

2. Masks are optional.

3. Snacks will be provided at the end of every shift. However, volunteers can bring their own snacks, especially if they have any dietary restrictions. Volunteers must bring their own water and water bottles.

4. Washroom facilities are very limited and will only be available on an emergency basis.

5. Cell phone use for student volunteers is strictly prohibited while on shift. That includes listening to music, talking, and texting. In case of an emergency, volunteers must inform their supervisors immediately.

6. All volunteers must arrive on time for their shifts. It will be difficult for latecomers to locate their groups once the groups disperse for canvassing and flyer distribution, and they will have missed all orientation and training instructions.

7.Volunteers will adhere to all procedures and follow supervisors' instructions at all times.

8. Orientation and training will be provided on-site at the beginning of every shift.

9. Volunteers don't need to sign up for a shift in advance. Simply show up on the day you're available, to the designated staging area, on time and ready to go. It's a good idea to arrive a few minutes before the start time.

10. Volunteers will receive a letter certifying their hours of service with RSFDF within two weeks after the end of the food drive.

11. High school graduates are encouraged to apply for the role of "Supervisor".

The need for food banks has never been direr! This is your opportunity to make a difference in the lives of families across the city.
